I can't believe how fast the past 5 weeks have gone. Oliver is home, off oxygen, and is already a month old! Even though he is really only awake for his feedings and a few other hours, we've started to get to know our little boy.
First of all, he is a really good baby. He only cries when he needs something, and other than that, he is just content with life. He smiles while falling asleep and has smiled at me a few times over the past couple of days for no reason. He likes holding hands and has even reached for my hand a few times to hold. He sneezes and gets the hiccups a lot.The top of his right ear is flat, but it is starting to round out now. He has an outie belly button, but it goes in when he stretches. He has dark grey eyes with a very light, almost purplish outer ring around his iris. He has his daddy's nose and his mommy's tiny mouth that he likes to scrunch into the tiniest "O."
He likes his binky when falling asleep or when he's trying with all his little might to poop. Even when he wants it, though, he makes a disgusted face whenever you give it to him. When he is really frantic for it, he shakes his head when you put it to his mouth to try and get it faster (though this usually makes it take longer, because it is already in his mouth).
He is a pretty sound sleeper, thanks to the noises in the NICU, but he has to go through his routine to fall asleep in the first place. He is fine falling asleep during the day, because he gets worn out staying up to do tummy time (which he hates), taking baths, or just playing. But since we aren't wearing him out at night he has to go through his routine in order to stay asleep for more than 30 minutes. First, he wakes up to eat, so he feeds on one side and gets burped. Then he lays down for about 10-15 minutes while he struggles to poop. After he gets his diaper changed, he feeds on the other side. Then he gets swaddled (even though he struggles to get out of it, he won't sleep long without being snug like a bug) and gets put back in bed. Then we turn on some white noise in the background to help him fall asleep. We just love our little guy and can't wait to see him grow.
