Halloween and Jaw Update

Oliver had a blast this Halloween! He really wanted to be a car, but we couldn't find a car costume last minute. He chose to be a chicken instead, and he and everyone who saw him absolutely loved it. The weekend before, we went to a corn maze that had a lot of things for Oliver to enjoy. There was a mini corn maze, a bouncy house, a corn bucket, a big slide, and a train.

For Halloween, we had Oliver practice saying "Trick or Treat!" He did really well, and he was definitely excited about the concept of getting candy. We went on Historic 25th Street in Ogden for Trick-or-Treating. Everyone thought he was adorable, but they kept calling him "she" or "her." Thankfully he doesn't understand the difference yet, or I'm sure his feelings would be hurt. I was surprised that he was so willing to wear his chicken hat. He even asked and is still asking (this very second) to wear his "ticken hat." Here are some pictures of my little cheeseball! You can definitely tell how excited he was to be a chicken.

Trick-or-Treating is serious business for this chicken!
Tomorrow it will be officially halfway through the six weeks of torture. Here are some things I've learned along the way about having my jaw wired shut.

- No matter how well food blends, always put it through the sieve, otherwise the teeth will get clogged, nothing can go through, and talking is nearly impossible
- I can probably be a ventriloquist after this
- Sneezing is painful
- Coughing is not effective
- Yawning is impossible and frustrating
- My lips get very dry
- I can't use my teeth to open things

I've realized how many things I've taken for granted my whole life that I wouldn't even think requires the jaw, including the above things. The thing I miss most about having jaw function is the mindlessness of it - just being able to eat whatever I want whenever I want. Now if I want to eat anything, I have to blend it, thin it out, put it through the sieve, probably warm it up again, and take at least an hour to eat it. Then I have to clean everything... It's pretty exhausting, actually. Of course, my options are very limited, so I've started creating a mental list of all the foods I'm going to eat when I get these things off. Apparently, it will still be hard for me to chew right after, but I'm willing to cut things up pretty small in order to eat what I want.

There are just a few perks to having my jaw wired shut. The doctor warned me that most people lose between 10-15 lbs during the 6 weeks. (Before you start thinking, "I should do this to lose weight," just know that the doctor said people who do it for weight loss actually end up gaining weight instead of losing it.) I have lost about 4 lbs now, but that isn't the good part. The good part is that I don't have to feel guilty about eating (or... drinking, I guess) cheesecake multiple times a week. This is similar to the second perk, which is when I don't feel like making a meal for myself, I don't have to feel guilty about just eating thinned pudding or something similar, because at least I'm getting calories.

Anyway, I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon to get a few elastics loosened. Unfortunately, the doctor decided he wanted to wait at least another week, because if my jaw snaps, then I'll have to start back at week one. On top of that, though, he is out of the office next week, so I have to wait two more weeks for my elastics to be loosened! I was so hoping to have more options to eat, even though I still wouldn't be allowed to chew anything. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. Once he loosens the elastics, it will allow me to exercise my muscles. The doctor will then have to check my function. Because the position of the fractured bone, it may cause some issues. If there are issues with the function of my jaw, he may need to do an operation. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though. Once I have the elastics loosened, it will only be one more week of torture.

In other news, Oliver's 2nd birthday is exactly a week from today! We are having his birthday party on Sunday, the 9th. I will write a post on it next week!
