Future? Future. Future!

I've been trying to figure out what I want to do for my future career. Since starting at BYU, I swear I have thought of 200 different things that I could, may, possibly want to do... When I was in high school, I was thinking about either going into interior design or psychology. Since I wanted to go to BYU, and they only had psychology, I stuck with that. Since my B.S. is in psychology, I considered every possible field I could go into for grad school with psychology (School Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, etc.), but nothing was a good fit for me. I finally decided to go back to interior design! I was accepted into Boston Architectural College for a Masters in Interior Design, but looking to the future, Jan and I decided that moving to Boston wasn't the best option for us. So, I (still!!!) have the lovely task of figuring out what I'm going to do next.

Recently, I've started considering jobs like dental hygiene or dental assistant, sonography (ultrasound), photography, or just something which would allow me to control what type of job I get (instead of low-paying customer service jobs that are less than satisfying). But! I keep thinking about interior design. They don't offer any degrees online, and most masters programs require a portfolio, which I don't have. By law, to become an interior designer, you must have formal education in the field with a lengthy internship, pass an exam, and get a license. To be an interior decorator, though, is a completely different story! The main difference between the two is that interior designers can do renovations, like tearing down walls, so they have to be able to read blueprints, etc. Interior decorators just stick to working with the room they are given. There are also no legal requirements. I found an online program that offers a program for a certificate in interior decorating, and it even has courses on how to start your own business. At first I was skeptical, but I think this might actually work for me. It would be a great job that I could stay home for. I've always wanted to have my own business. I would get to have a job that I actually enjoy! I would get a pretty good portfolio if I decide to do interior design in the future.

I'm still a little hesitant though, just because it is something completely different for me, and it is definitely a risk. Decisions, decisions.
